How to Plan a Wedding in 6 Months in Houston (Without Losing Your Freaking Mind)

So… you want or NEED to plan your wedding in just SIX MONTHS?

First - deep breath.
Second - you are not behind.
Third - we just need to get strategic about this.

Because here’s the truth: planning a wedding in Houston in 6 months is absolutely doable… but it’s not something you want to wing.

Let’s walk through what actually matters (and what doesn’t), so you can move forward with confidence instead of panic.

First Things First: Is 6 Months Enough Time?

Yes - with a BIG asterisk.

Houston is a busy wedding market.

Vendors book quickly, especially for:

  • Fall dates (October is basically the Olympics of weddings here)

  • Popular venues

  • High-demand vendors (photography, planning, florals)

But here’s the good news:
There are so many incredible vendors in Houston that if you move quickly and make confident decisions, you’ll still have amazing options.

This is where most couples get stuck - they hesitate, over-research, and lose time.

  • The goal here is decisive, guided action (not perfection).

6-Month Wedding Planning Timeline (Houston Edition)

Month 6: Lock in the Big Three

This is your drop everything and focus phase.

  • Venue

  • Planner (hi 👋)

  • Photographer

Why? Because everything else flows from these.

Planner Pro Tip: Many Houston venues require preferred vendors or have specific logistics - you want guidance before you start booking randomly.

Month 5: Secure Your Core Vendors

Now we build your foundation:

  • Catering and Bar [sometimes the bar is included with venue]

  • Florist, Designer and/or Decorator

  • Entertainment (DJ/ Emcee, Band and Live Musicians for Ceremony and Cocktail Hour)

  • Rentals (Linens, Furniture, Decor, etc.)

This is also when your overall design direction should start taking shape - not just Pinterest chaos, but an actual cohesive vision.

Month 4: Details + Guest Experience

Now we can start to refine:

  • Wedding Website + RSVPs

  • Attire Selections

  • Hotel Blocks

  • Transportation (if needed)

This is also when we start thinking about flow - how your day will actually feel, not just the way it will look.

Month 3: Finalize + Confirm

At this point, you should:

  • Finalize Your Vendor Team

  • Start Creating a Rough Draft of Your Timeline

  • Design a Tentative Floor Plan

  • Confirm Guest Counts (roughly)

This is where things start to feel real - and also where stress can really begin to creep in if you don’t have structure.

Month 2: Logistics Mode Activated

  • Seating Chart Planning

  • Final Design Tweaks

  • Timeline Drafts

  • Vendor Check-Ins

This is where a planner becomes your best friend, because this part gets… super detailed.

Month 1: Smooth + Steady

  • Final Confirmations with All Vendors

  • Make Final Payments

  • Final Walkthrough at Venue with Planner

  • Packing All the Things You Didn’t Realize You Needed

At this point, your job should be to show up and enjoy it.

The Biggest Mistakes Couples Make When Planning Fast

Let me save you from the common chaos:

1. Waiting too long to book vendors

If you love someone - book them FAST! Houston vendors go quickly, especially for Saturdays and peak seasons.

2. Trying to do everything yourself

Six months + full-time job + wedding planning = burnout.

3. Overcomplicating the design

You do NOT need 17 statement moments.

Pick a few things. Do them extremely well. That makes a much bigger impact on your guest experience, as well as saves your sanity!

4. Not understanding venue vs planner roles

Your venue coordinator is NOT managing your entire wedding.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I see. I will dive further into this in another blog post, but knowing the diference between a venue coordinator, a day-of coordinator and a planner is critical.

Realistically: Who 6-Month Planning Is Best For

This timeline works best if you:

  • Are okay making decisions quickly

  • Don’t want to spend an entire year (or more) planning

  • Have a clear-ish vision (or are open to guidance)

  • Want someone to lead the process, not just assist

Sound familiar? Yeah… this is basically ALL of my couples.

How to Make This Feel Easy (Instead of Overwhelming)

Here’s the secret no one tells you:

It’s not about having more time.
It’s about having the right support and structure.

When you:

  • Stop second-guessing

  • Have someone filtering options for you

  • Know what actually matters

→ everything starts to feel lighter
