How to Choose a Wedding Planner: Why I Don't Take Every Wedding

I turn down weddings. Not a ton of them, but more than you might expect from someone who has been doing this for 18 years and clearly loves it. And I want to tell you why, because the reason is the same reason you would actually want to work with me.

Here is the short version. I do not take every wedding because I am not trying to book the most weddings. I am trying to be fully present for the ones I say yes to. Those two goals do not live in the same house.

So if you have ever wondered why some planners have a waitlist and a "let's see if we are a fit" conversation instead of a big flashing "book now" button, let me pull back the curtain a little.

I Only Say Yes to What I Can Truly Pour Into

The honest truth is that I only take the number of weddings I can give my whole self to. Not my leftover self. My whole self.

A wedding day is not a light lift. Behind the pretty photos is a mountain of logistics, timelines, vendor coordination, and a hundred small decisions that all have to land in the right order. When I take on too many at once, every couple gets a thinner version of me. I am not willing to hand you that. I would rather serve fewer couples deeply than a crowd of them at arm's length.

When I say yes to your date, I am promising you that on your wedding day, you are the only wedding in my world. That promise only means something if I have not overbooked myself into the ground.

Fit Matters More Than You Might Think

I also say no when we are not the right match on style, and I promise that is a kindness, not a rejection.

Here is the honest truth. After 18 years, I could plan and coordinate just about any kind of wedding you put in front of me. The logistics, the timelines, the vendor wrangling, that part I can do in my sleep no matter what look you are going for. So this is not about what I am capable of pulling off.

It is about where my heart actually is. I lean classic and traditional, with some color and a whole lot of story. What I love most is a wedding with a storytelling element woven through it, the kind of details that mean something and could not belong to anyone else. And above all of it, I have a signature I am known for: vintage and moody. That is my happy place, and it is where my work truly sings.

So if what you want is sleek, ultra modern, and over-the-top luxurious, I will be straight with you: that is just not my bag. There is a planner out there who lights all the way up for exactly that, and you deserve her, not me stretching to fake a style that is not mine. Knowing that now saves us both time and gets you into the right hands faster.

The right couple can feel the fit in the very first conversation. It clicks. We are laughing, we are finishing each other's sentences about foliage and candlelight, and I am already seeing your day in my head. That feeling is not a nice bonus. It is the whole thing. It is the difference between a planner who is executing a task and one who is genuinely, personally invested in your day.

I Would Rather Refer You Than Half-Serve You

If we are not a fit, or my calendar is full, I will tell you the truth and point you toward someone wonderful.

I am in several national networking and education groups, and I know a lot of talented people in this industry. So passing you along to the right person is not me giving up on you. It is me making sure you land in good hands. I would genuinely rather send you to a planner who can pour into you than keep you just to keep you and give you less than you deserve.

Here is a thing I feel strongly about. Handing your wedding day to someone who loves you, like a sweet aunt or a very organized friend, is not the same as handing it to someone who has done this hundreds of times. Love is not the same as experience. On the highest-stakes day of your life, you want both in the room, and if I cannot be the experienced one for you, I want to make sure someone great is.

What This Actually Means For You

When a planner is selective, you are the one who wins.

It means the person running your day is not stretched thin across five other couples that same weekend. It means the calm you feel is real, because I have seen it all before and there is genuinely very little that can surprise me anymore. I am not a naturally calm person, ask anyone who knows me. But on a wedding day, I do not flinch. Because I have been here, in some version of this exact moment, more times than I can count.

Here is the truth nobody tells you: almost every wedding has a hiccup. The good ones just have someone making sure you never find out about it. That someone can only be that for you if she is not drowning in her own overbooked calendar.
